What do we do?

Cogitant provides high value, low volume advice to clients facing complex innovation and technology challenges. Specialities include technology due diligence, strategy development, innovation management and information security. Cogitant's track record of delivering tangible, pragmatic advice has secured high levels of repeat business from a small but diverse group clients since its foundation in 2008. You can read about Cogitant's client engagements in the Projects and Assignments section of this site, although detail is limited as much of the work remains confidential. The company's owner, Director and principal consultant is Mike Boyle. While Cogitant's services are largely based on Mike's capabilities and expertise, the company can supplement these as necessary to meet specific assignment needs.

What do you mean, high value, low volume?

InkCogitant likes short, sharp engagements, typically in to 10 - 20 workday range. We like the idea of small, deliverable-focussed activity where we can do something visibly useful and move on. The high value part means we're only interested in doing things where the benefits are clear to both parties.

Cogitant aims to provide a refreshing alternative to some other big-name consultancies. Our aim is always to do as little work as possible (while satisfying your requirements, of course). You will never return to the office to find we've added another 28 team members to the project. While this means we won't be executing international ERP deployments for you, we will be looking for shortcuts that deliver meaningful results. Plus ERP is so 1990's guys, are we right?

How do we do it?

Robot

At the heart of Cogitant's approach is the radical idea of understanding how stuff actually works. When we're not working with clients you'll often find us soldering, coding, testing, breaking or reading about things, just for fun. We call it learning by doing. It means that when a DD target claims a change-the-world AI / ML solution we can ask them about the models they are using and draw some conclusions from their answer. We can spot a Raspberry Pi in a 'product' at 100 paces and ask about SD card wear levelling. When a SaaS startup claims to be 'the next SalesForce' we can assess their smoke-to-mirrors ratio by checking their last AWS bill. And when someone carelessly mentions blockchain we can ask them to explain how that works, and why this is a good use case. That's always entertaining. Overall the approach is fun and it's effective. Not sure why this idea never caught on.

How do we work?

Cogitant has worked under many different commercial arrangements with clients over the years, from fixed price lump sum to reimbursible based on an hourly rate. The best form of agreement varies with assignment and we're always open to a discussion about how risk and uncertainty are best managed. Our preference is to provide a Master Consulting Services Agreement against which schedules and statements of work can then be drafted within minimal admin effort.

Cogitant works exclusively on terms, conditions and practices that place its services outside the scope of the Finance Act's badly drafted off-payroll working terms, commonly known as IR35. If your procurement team is unable / unwilling to differentiate between a consultancy offering specific expertise as a service and a person offering to occupy a desk previously filled by a staff member, then we're not going to get along.

Who are you, again? Can I speak to your manager?
